2010 Asian American Health and Healthcare Survey Report
Introduction
In 2010, Asian Center – Southeast Michigan (AC – SE MI) was awarded a Capacity Building Grant (CBG) to reduce health disparities among Asian Americans in Michigan by working on social determinants that caused these health disparities. Since there has been limited data on Asian Americans in health, healthcare and social determinants in Michigan, AC – SE MI decided to start with the fundamental approach to “ask” the targeted population about their health and social needs. Therefore a survey was designed to accomplish this task. There were five top populated Asian ethnic groups involved in this task: Asian Indians, Chinese, Filipinos, Koreans and Vietnamese. It was truly a Community Base Participatory Research (CBPR) that all partner organizations worked on the survey questionnaire development and execution together. Bilingual surveyors were recruited and trained to carry out the survey. Phone or face-to-face interviews were taken to obtain answers from the participants by surveyors, which were then entered into an on-line survey questionnaire by the surveyors to assure higher completion of the questions. This also solved the language issue. The five community organization partners were:
Asian Indians | Michigan Association of Physicians of Indian Origin | MAPI |
Chinese | Michigan Chinese Women Association | MCWA |
Filipinos | Philippine Nurse Association of Michigan | PNAM |
Koreans | Korean American Cultural Center of Michigan | KACCM |
Vietnamese | Vietnamese American Association of Michigan | VAAM |
With the help of an on-line survey system from the University of Michigan, AC – SE MI was able to conduct this survey with direct input to a database and then transfer data into statistical software for analyses. There was only a brief summary at the end of the 2010 fiscal year due to the large data amount of collected; more analyses were done this year. This report covers more than 95% of the reportable data. There is still a small amount of data that is qualitative or diverse and has to be manually sorted and the details compared before this information is reportable. It includes typed in answers under “Other”, or “Comments.” etc. Subjects of the survey included:
- Health Insurance
- Regular check-ups
- Immunization and Disease Records
- Life style/Job
- Diet
- Drinks
- Tobacco/Drug Use
- Exercises
- Clinical Trial Participation
The survey was targeted for 75 participants per ethnic group with the following inclusive criteria:
- Age 21 years and older
- Both male and female
- Willing to answer questions by a trained surveyor.
Efforts were made to achieve diversity within groups on several demographic characteristics that may influence responses, e.g., socioeconomic status, education, employment status and occupation (e.g., professionals vs. other small business owners and non-employed), age, and length of residency in the U.S. (e.g., recent immigrants, long-term settled immigrants, and American-born). The survey was carried out within a three-month period. Each partner recruited five to seven surveyors to conduct the actual survey. Some could enter data electronically during the interview; others took a hard copy and wrote down answers, then later enter the responses online. All partners completed their task within the given time. The final data count included 410 participants. The survey data were cleaned and put into a matrix of 410×270 arrays. With over 100 major parameters, the correlation study was huge. Each Asian ethnic group also wanted their own data; this will allow us to compare between different groups to see if cultural differences exist within Asian groups. In this report, we only show data for the combined five ethnic groups. The report consists of two major parts:
- The first part covers demographic information and all questions in bar charts
- The second part covers correlation of data with respect to demographic and/or between two related parameters
Each ethnic group data follow exactly the same pattern and format as the five combined groups’ data. We also have them available but not shown here. Survey Data Outcome
